Manny Batinga

Manny Batinga is in his second semester of college. At the age of 19, Manny is taking classes at two UH community colleges. While he is majoring in Fire at HCC, he is taking his Japanese language requirement at KCC with Kobuke sensei.

Manny wants to major in Fire because he “wants to become a firefighter and help other people.”

Manny graduated from President William McKinley High School in 2016 where he earned a scholarship from the McKinley Foundation that aided him in attending college. In his free time, Manny enjoys weightlifting and working on his car, a 1986 Toyota Corolla.

Desiree Manayan

Desiree Manayan is a second-year student at KCC whose major is in nursing. She commutes to campus by bus from Kalihi and is so far, finishing up her pre-requisites for the  nursing program. Eventually Manayan hopes to one day be a registered nurse, specifically specializing in pediatrics.

Her favorite class here at KCC is Creative Writing, which she took with Mrs. Harada. What she says she likes about it the most is how she would write multiple drafts to perfect the final pieces pieces, which would in turn help Manayan work out her story in the end.

Manayan is also an avid reader. She will read whatever catches her interest, but mostly she will check in the Young Adult section of the library.

Stefan Cranston Age: 18 Hometown: Honolulu, O‘ahu Major: Life Sciences Stefan Cranston is a first-year student at KCC who intends to go to Pre-Med school. He loves to help people and believes that being a doctor is the best way to do it. He was also influenced to choose Medical school by the wish to help his own family members with their health issues. He playfully describes his hometown as “where his heart is”, but he is originally from Portugal and has made Hawai‘i his home for now. Stefan is quite adventurous: he enjoys cliff jumping in his free time. He says that it’s the way he’s found to face his own fear of heights, pushing himself to go further and higher every time. “Every time I am on top of the jump, I think I am about to die…but I convince myself: it’s just gravity. I just need self-control, [I just need to] trust myself and…pull through.”
