KCC’s Student Congress is searching for interested students to apply for any of its five open positions for the 2018-2019 academic school year. With the application time period open from now until Friday, April 6, at 4 p.m., students have the option to apply for one of the following positions: president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and public relations officer.

Those who are looking to apply for any of these positions must meet the eligibility requirements of being enrolled in at least six credits at KCC, have KCC noted as their home campus, and have a GPA of at least 2.0.

Attending one out of the two mandatory orientation sessions that will be held on Tuesday, April 3, and Wednesday, April 4, from 3 to 4 p.m. in ʻIliahi 123C is another requirement of interested students who are applying. Student Congress advises students to inform its faculty advisor Shannon Sakaue at sks78@hawaii.edu in the case that they are unable to attend one of these sessions.

To apply for a position, click here to fill out the online application. All applications for any position must be emailed to Sakaue by Friday, April 6 at 4 p.m. through UH email. Student Congress will review all applications to confirm that the students who applied are eligible. Upon verification, Student Congress will notify these students through their email that they qualify as official candidates and will be allowed to campaign on campus from April 5-13.

For each position, students must be able to follow through with the following tasks:

President:

  1. Be responsible for convening meetings of the Student Congress.
  2. Prepare meeting agendas.
  3. Identify Student Congress committee nominations with a majority confirmation vote of Student Congress.
  4. Be the spokesperson for Student Congress in all matters appearing before the organization.
  5. Be required to make a report to Student Congress at the end of each semester.
  6. Shall assume other duties as directed by Student Congress and generally belonging to the President.
  7. Must be able to dedicate approximately 20 hours a week.

Vice President:

  1. Perform all duties generally belonging to that office.
  2. Be responsible for assisting the treasurer in preparing Student Congress annual budget, financial statements, and requisitions.
  3. Conduct meetings and assume all of the duties of the President in absence of the President.
  4. Be responsible for preparing necessary reports as directed by Student Congress.
  5. Must be able to dedicate approximately 20 hours a week.

Secretary:

  1. Responsible for keeping permanent records of Student Congress.
  2. Record and distribute copies of the minutes and pertinent materials to all members.
  3. Assist the President in notifying all members of the meetings.
  4. Responsible for preparing necessary reports as directed by Student Congress.
  5. Work with Public Relations officer to keep the students informed of Student Congress actions and events.
  6. Authorized to appoint a Secretary pro tempore in the case of absence (not extended absence).
  7. Must be able to dedicate approximately 15 hours a week.

Treasurer:

  1. Responsible for the regular review of all Student Congress financial records.
  2. Prepare the Student Congress annual budget, financial statements and requisitions with assistance and consultation of the Vice President.
  3. Responsible for preparing necessary reports as directed by Student Congress, including fiscal reports.
  4. Must be able to dedicate approximately 10 hours a week.

Public Relations Officer:

  1. Be responsible for all correspondence related to the Office of Public Relations.
  2. Send out information to all concerned bodies.
  3. Release of the information to the press and be in direct contact with the college newspaper, The Kapi‘o News.
  4. Seek out information and support from students and faculty.
  5. Be responsible for preparing all necessary reports as directed by Student Congress.
  6. Must be able to dedicate approximately 10 hours a week.
